Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will list the companies wholly owned by the Government, other than the nationalised corporations, their profits or loss for the latest financial year and the number of people they each employ.

The information in respect of companies which my right hon. Friend, or authorities appointed by him, are responsible, is as follows:

Appledore Shipbuilders Ltd. (1,129 employees).—A pre-tax loss of £33,123 was recorded by the group in the year ended 30th September 1975.

Beagle Aircraft Ltd.—The company is in liquidation.

Cable and Wireless Ltd. (9,514 employees).—For the year ended 31st March 1976 profit, after tax and extraordinary items, was £12,024,000.

Govan Shipbuilders Ltd. (5,700 employees).—A loss of £9.573 million was recorded in the year ending 26th December 1975.

Herbert Ltd. (No direct employees).—This company was formed on 10th December 1975 to purchase all the ordinary shares in Alfred Herbert Ltd.

Rolls-Royce (1971) Ltd. (64,082 employees).—For the year ended 31st December 1975 profit after tax was £2 million.

SB Realisations Ltd. (No direct employees).—This is a holding company with an important share in Short Bros. and Harland. Loss attributable to SB Realisations for the year ending 31st August 1975 was £1.695 million.

Sunderland Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd. (6,991 employees).—For the year ended 30th September 1975 a profit after tax and extraordinary items of £1.823 million was recorded.

Ownership of Rolls-Royce (1971) Ltd. and Herbert Ltd. is vested in the National Enterprise Board.
