HC Deb 06 August 1976 vol 916 cc1175-6W
Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will indicate (a) the rates of allowances paid to severely disabled war pensioners with their motor cars, or as pcma's current in 1965, (b) the rates of those allowances now paid and (c) the rates to which those allowances would need to be increased in order to restore their 1965 values, bearing in mind rising costs and prices in the interim period.

Mr. Ennals

The following is the information:

  1. (a) In 1965 maintenance allowances for pensioners with Ministry cars varied between £35 and £65 per annum according to the age of the car; pcma was £95 per annum.
  2. (b) The range of maintenance allowances remains unchanged; pema is now £100 per annum.
  3. (c) At June 1976, for maintenance allowance, a range from £95.64 to £177.61; for pcma, £259.59.

These figures exclude the £25 garaging allowance payable in 1965 which has not been paid to new beneficiaries since 1972, when all vehicle holders were relieved of the obligation to provide garaging.
