HC Deb 06 August 1976 vol 916 cc1040-1W
Mr. Whitehead

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many items of radio transmission equipment have been impounded on failure to produce a valid licence in 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975, respectively.

Dr. Summerskill

Transmitting equipment that has been illegally used is normally forefeited to the Home Office by court order after conviction of the offender. The numbers involved in the past four years were:

1972 93
1973 136
1974 235
1975 157

In the same four years Her Majesty's Customs and Excise have notified the Home Office of the seizure of 1,576 transmitters imported in contravention of the Radiotelephonic Transmitters (Control of Manufacture and Importation) Order 1968.

Mr. Whitehead

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will seek powers to make the retailing of radio transmitting equipment, which cannot be legally licensed, an offence.

Dr. Summerskill

The Radiotelephonic Transmitters (Control of Manufacture and Importation) Order 1968, made under the Wireless Telegraphy Act 1967, prohibits the manufacture or importation of certain radio transmitting equipment that cannot legally be used in the United Kingdom. We do not propose to introduce further legislation at present.
