§ Mr. Michael McGuireasked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many doctors in the regions in England, except the North-West, are receiving the special payment under the designated area allowance scheme, giving, in each case, the name of the town or district, the number of doctors concerned, and the rate and period of payment.
§ Dr. OwenI regret that the information is not generally available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. The type 1 allowance, currently £750 per annum, applies in an area continuously designated for at least three years and is payable while the area is designated and for a concessionary period of three years afterwards; the type 2 allowance, currently £1,150 per annum, applies in an area continuously designated for one year with average lists of 3,000 or more patients and is payable while the criteria are satisfied and for a concessionary period of two years after the average list drops below 3,000. The estimated total number of doctors in England in receipt of designated area allowances at 1st October 1975 was type 1:5,177 and type 2:366. The estimated number of doctors in England, other than in the North-West, in receipt of designated area allowances at 1st October 1974, the latest date for which any breakdown is available, when the rates were type 1: £490 and type 2: £750, by family practitioner committee areas within regional health authority regions was as follows:
