HC Deb 06 August 1976 vol 916 cc1162-3W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations he has received regarding the failure of cigarette manufacturers to print health warnings on advertising material; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Owen

I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Brent, South (Mr. Pavitt) on 18th March and 26th July. Apart from these I have not recently received representations regarding the failure of cigarette manufacturers to print the reference to the health warning on advertising material. As a result of the discussions being held with the industry on new voluntary agreements, to which I referred in my speech in the debate on smoking and health on 16th January, I would hope to see the health warning and not just a reference to it on advertisements, including those at the point of sale, and the health warning itself much strengthened. —[Vol. 907, c.630; Vol. 916, c.117–18.]
