§ 40. Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that in 1968 the Public Accounts Committee reported that more than one-half of the claims by immigrants from the Indian subcontinent for wives, children and dependent relatives were found in a representative sample to be false; what is his latest estimate of such false claims; what action has been or is being taken to prevent these false claims and with what results; and how much he estimates is being lost to the Treasury by these false claims.
§ Mr. Denzil DaviesI am afraid it is not possible to provide estimates of the figures for which my hon. Friend asks. As regards the steps to prevent false claims, I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer I gave on 4th August to the hon. Member for Beckenham (Mr. Goodhart).
