HC Deb 04 August 1976 vol 916 c799W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what percentage of total production of petroleum products is carried by (a) pipeline, (b) road and (c) sea.

Mr. Oakes

Because of double handling, the tonnage figures recorded of refined petroleum products transported within the United Kingdom by various modes of transport are considerably in excess of total deliveries—that is, by about 50 per cent. Subject to this double handling, the details are as follows:

TRANSPORT OF PETROLEUM—1975
Quantity (thousand tonnes) Tonne/kilometers (thousands)
Road 50,637 (41½%) 2,471,622
Rail 16,855 (14%) 2,139,134
Water—
Coastal 25,515 (21%) 13,775,073
Inland 5,547 (4½%) 340,172
Inland Pipeline 23,236 (19%) 2,017,013
