HC Deb 04 August 1976 vol 916 c871W
44. Mr. Douglas-Mann

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the latest estimate by his Department of the number of gipsy families in England and Wales, and of the number of caravan sites to accommodate them.

Mr. John Silkin

There are probably about 7,000 families. As at 31st July 1976 there were 137 local authority sites, offering accommodation for 2,187 gipsy caravans. Another eight sites, for about 120 caravans, are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
