HC Deb 04 August 1976 vol 916 cc827-8W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in view of the concern felt by the lower-paid workers and trade unionists at the level of salaries paid to British citizens who take employment in the various offices connected with the Common Market; and in view of the Government's policy of incomes restraint on British citizens and the fact that these payments are paid for in part by British taxpayers, he will have discussions with the Common Market authorities designed to reduce these payments.

Mr. Hattersley

I have been asked to reply.

The Government's policy on income restraint affects salary and wages paid in Great Britain, not to British subjects who live and work outside the United Kingdom. British subjects who accept posts within international organisations accept the salary that has been deemed appropriate to such posts.
