HC Deb 03 August 1976 vol 916 c731W
Mr. Dudley Smith

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) if he will give the latest available estimate of the numbers employed in the planning and administration of trunk and local authority roads;

(2) if he will give the latest available estimate of the total numbers employed in the construction and maintenance of trunk roads and local authority roads.

Mr. Marks

So far as the Questions relate to local authority roads, I have no information about the numbers of local authority staff employed on the work. 1,650 staff of the Department are employed on work directly concerning roads and their construction. The work of many others is related in some way to roads and their use. The numbers do not break down under the headings in the Questions.
