§ Mr. Michael Morrisasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what 735W directions have been issued to the highway authorities regarding the repositioning of "cat's eyes" on roads to conform with United Kingdom acceptance of metrication.
§ Mr. MarksThe positioning of road studs derives from prescription of road markings in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1975 which used the metric system of measurement for the first time. There is no obligation to change existing road markings under these regulations, which must be complied with only in the case of new schemes and when existing markings and associated road studs—such as "cats eyes"—are being replaced in the course of maintenance.
