Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will publish in theOfficial Report further details to those contained in his letter to the hon. Member for Newham, North-West of 21st July on immigration, showing how and on what basis the figures given are arrived at, with particular reference to how the average family of immigrants awaiting entry into the United Kingdom is calculated to have two children.

Mr. Rowlands

Further details regarding the number of United Kingdom passport holders and their dependants in India were given to my hon. Friend in my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State's letter of 27th July. An analysis of 1,000 outstanding applications for special vouchers in New Delhi has shown that the average size of such a family is four, i.e., head of houseehold, spouse and two children.
