Mr. Roper

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he intends to bring forward legislation to seek to implement the recommendations in the Crowther Committee on Consumer Credit relating to credit unions.

I have written today to the Secretary of the Credit Union League of Great Britain, inviting him to enter into discussions on the possibility of providing a more satisfactory legislative framework in which credit unions might operate within the legislation proposed in today's White Paper on Licensing and Supervision of Deposit-Taking Institutions.
