Mr. John Moore

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department where. and in what activities, the 2,757 additional staff employed by his Department between 1st March 1974 and 1st April 1976 are engaged.

The net increase in staff was 3,757 during the period. This included about 350 staff transferred from the former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications to the Home Office after 1st March 1974. The other 3,400 were employed in the following areas:

(i) Prisons, borstals, detention and remand centres 2,300
(ii) Police support services (telecommunications, forensic science, computers) 400
(iii) Immigration and Nationality Department (including Immigration Service) 300
(iv) Other areas 400

The additional staff were required to fill vacancies which existed on 1st March 1974 and also to meet an increasing volume of work throughout the Home Office, but for the most part in demand related services in the operational areas of the Department.
