HC Deb 14 April 1976 vol 909 cc547-8W
Mr. Watkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many children sat O-level examinations after leaving school in 1975, 1974 and 1973, respectively.

Miss Margaret Jackson

My Department does not collect this information. The numbers of candidates from grant-aided further education establishments taking GCE O-level examinations in 1973 and 1974 were 136,908 and 127,197 respectively. The figure for 1975 is not yet available.

Mr. Watkinson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if it is possible for a child to sit O-level examinations after he or she has left school; and if it is possible for a child to sit CSE examinations after he or she has left schoool.

Miss Margaret Jackson

A child reaching the statutory school leaving age need not remain at school in order to take GCE O-level examinations. In the case of the CSE a child must be in full-time attendance at school unless aged not less than 17 years on 1st September of the calendar year in which the examinations are taken.
