HC Deb 14 April 1976 vol 909 cc577-8W
Dr. Bray

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the total subsidy, in the form of income tax allowances, paid to the owners of private houses in 1975.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

I have been asked to reply.

Assuming that my hon. Friend is referring to relief from income tax for payments of mortgage interest, the latest estimate for 1975–76 is £865 million. This estimate reflects a downwards revision from the previous estimate as a result of later information on the total of mortgage interest payments.
