HC Deb 12 April 1976 vol 909 cc425-6W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the gross internal production of sheepmeat in Wales in each year since 1970, in metric tons.

Mr. John Morris

Figures for the tonnage of sheepmeat produced in Wales are not available. Figures of estimated production of sheepmeat from sheep slaughtered in Welsh abattoirs are as follows:

April / March Years 000 tonnes
1970 10.3
1971 11.2
1972 10.2
1973 9.7
1974 11.4
1975 11.8 (provisional)

These slaughterings may include some sheep not reared in Wales and exclude sheep produced in Wales which are slaughtered outside the Principality.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total consumption of sheepmeat in Wales in each year since 1970, in metric tons.

Mr. John Morris

Very approximate estimates of the household consumption of sheepmeat in Wales may be derived from National Food Survey data andde facto population figures, although the National Food Survey sample is designed to provide averages for the whole of Great Britain rather than for Wales and England separately. For Wales these estimates give the following results:

000 tonnes
1970 21.6
1971 23.8
1972 24.4
1973 18.8
1974 16.8
1975 17.7

These figures exclude consumption of mutton and lamb in meat products and meat taken outside the home in catering establishments.
