Mr. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many prisoners in Scotland are currently segregated from others (a) at the decision of the authorities for the maintenance of discipline, and (b) at their own request for protection.

Mr. William Ross

Sixteen prisoners are currently segregated from others for the maintenance of discipline and 33 at their own request for protection. Twenty of the latter category, while kept apart from the main body of prisoners, enjoy association at work, exercise and recreation within their own group.

Mr. Reid

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many inmates in Scottish penal institutions are currently sleeping (a) two to a cell (b) three to a cell, and (c) more than three to a cell.

On 30th March 1976, out of a total penal population of 5,095, there were 1,084 inmates sleeping two to a single cell and 768 sleeping three to a single cell. No single cell accommodated more than three inmates, but 595 inmates were sharing dormitory-designed accommodation.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the current ratio of officers to male and female inmates in Scottish penal institutions.

Mr. William Ross

On 2nd March 1976 the ratio of prison officer class staff deployed in the treatment and management of male inmates was 1:2.6 and of female inmates 1:1.2, respectively.
