§ Sir George Youngasked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will state the additional revenue which would accrue to the National Health Service if a charge of £1 were made for each visit to or by a general practitioner.
§ Dr. OwenIt is estimated that the average number of such visits is of the order of 3½ per patient per year. On this basis, the additional gross revenue might be some £160 million a year in England. But the net revenue, after allowing for such factors as exemptions on income or 319W other grounds, additional administrative costs, and any fall in the number of visits following the introduction of such a charge, would be very much less.
