HC Deb 05 April 1976 vol 909 c27W
Mr. Stanley

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of the total working population in the United Kingdom are (a) members of trade unions affiliated to the Trades Union Congress, (b) members of other trades unions and (c) not members of trades union.

Mr. Harold Walker

The latest available information about the total membership of trade unions was published in the November 1975 issue of the Department of EmploymentGazette. It is estimated that the total membership of trade unions affiliated to the Trades Union Congress at the end of 1974 represented 40| per cent. of the total working population of the United Kingdom; that membership of other trade unions represented 5 per cent. and that 54£ per cent. of the working population were not members of trade unions.
