Mr. Jim Callaghanasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will take steps to amend the teachers' superannuation regulations to allow all of war service, for ex-Service men of Polish origin, to be credited for pension entitlements.
§ Miss Margaret JacksonThese regulations allow the war service of post-war entrants into teaching to reckon as to one-half for pension in accordance with Civil Service practice. They accordingly define the war service which is to reckon as that prescribed for post-war entrants to the Civil Service by Section 1 of the Superannuation Act 1946; i.e., for men, service in the Armed Forces of the Crown, the Merchant Navy or the Mercantile Marine.
Service in the Polish armed forces does not reckon for this purpose because those forces came under a provisional Polish Government in this country and did not, therefore, constitute " Armed Forces of the Crown ". Service in the Polish Resettlement Corps does reckon, since the 74W Corps was created as part of the British Army.
