asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how he calculated the figure of 40,000 tons of imported skimmed milk powder for incorporation under the proposed EEC scheme.

The quantity of skim milk powder likely to be taken up in each member State under the scheme established by Regulation (EEC) No. 563/76 is related to its usage of vegetable protein. The United Kingdom uses about 10 per cent. of total Community requirements of vegetable protein and is therefore likely to take up approximately 10 per cent. of the 400,000 tonnes of skim milk powder to be sold under Regulation (EEC) No. 563/76 in the Community as a whole.

The figure of 40,000 tonnes does not relate to imports. There are about 32,000 tonnes of skimmed milk powder in intervention stores in the United Kingdom; this quantity, together with any further
