HC Deb 05 April 1976 vol 909 cc90-1W
Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total number of local authority councillors convicted of corrupt practices in each year since 1945, broken down by year of conviction and by year or years in which the offences were committed, and by the type of authority on which the councillors served, whether county or district.

Mr. William Ross

I regret that it is possible to provide this information only for the years 1964 to 1974. During this period criminal proceedings were taken against three town councillors in Scotland under the Prevention of Corruption Acts. One of these cases was prosecuted in 1968 and the other two in 1969. All three cases resulted in convictions, but one, in 1969, was subsequently quashed on appeal.
