asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list in the Official Report the change in exchange rate from January 1970 to the most recent convenient date between the £ sterling and the currencies of all other countries which are members of the United Nations Organisation, indicating the percentage

the last 20 years for each of the following currencies: (1) US dollar, (2) French franc, (3) German mark, (4) Italian lira, (5) Swiss franc, (6) Danish kroner, (7) Swedish kroner, (8) Belgian franc, (9) Dutch guilder, (10) Japanese yen, and (11) South African rand.

Information about the various exchange rates is not available for 1st January for the years in question but the rates at end-December for the past 20 years were as follows:

devaluation or revaluation as appropriate in each case.

The required information for all countries that are members of the United Nations would involve disproportionate time and effort; the average of the daily exchange rates of the major currencies in January 1970 and February 1976 were as follows:
