Mr. Clemitson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many people were employed in each of the following sections of the health and personal social services, as defined in the consultative document " Priorities for Health and Personal Social Services in England ", (a) in the financial year 1970–71 and (b) currently: general and acute hospital and maternity services, primary care, services mainly for the elderly and physically handicapped, services for the mentally ill, services mainly for children, services for the mentally handicapped and other services;

(2) how many people she estimates will be employed in each of the following sections of the health and personal social services, as defined in the consultative document " Priorities for Health and Personal Social Services in England " in 1979–80: general and acute hospital and maternity services, primary care, services mainly for the elderly and physically handicapped, services for the mentally ill, services mainly for children, services for the mentally handicapped and other services.

As is stated in paragraph 11, page 81 of the consultative document to which my hon. Friend refers, the programme budget can be used to explore the manpower implications of the priorities proposed in the document. I regret however that it is not possible at present to give reliable estimates of the numbers of staff employed or likely to be employed in each programme.
