Notes:

  1. 1. The ages of the children are four and six. Rent and rates are £4.33 and £1.64 a week respectively. Information based on the exact assumptions given in the noble Lord's Question could not be obtained without disproportionate expense.
  2. 2. Family allowances of £1.50 a week are payable.
  3. 3. Work expenses are assumed to be £1.00 a week.
  4. 4. The table is not to be interpreted as meaning that changes in earnings automatically result in changes in benefit. Family income supplements, free school meals and free welfare milk are awarded for periods of 12 months irrespective of changes of income during this period.

in respect of each earnings increase of £1 from £25 per week to £60 per week the deductions by way of income tax; National Insurance contribution; loss of family income supplement; loss of rent rebates; loss of rate rebates; and loss of free school meals; assuming the earner is a married man with two children aged between 5 and 10 and that he pays £4 in weekly rent and £2 in weekly rates.
