Mr. Michael Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the total number of teachers employed in the maintained sector on (a) 1st October 1964, (b) 1st October 1970 and (c) 1st October 1975; and how many children were attending school on each of those dates.

Mr. Mulley

The number of teachers—including the full-time equivalent of part-time teachers—employed in maintained nursery, primary, secondary and special schools in England and Wales was 306,829 on 1st October 1964 and 370,748 on 1st October 1970. Information relating to 30th September 1975 is being collected from local education authorities but not all returns have yet been received.

Figures of pupils in schools are collected only as at January each year. In January 1965 there were 7,186,626 pupils in maintained nursery, primary, secondary and special schools in England and Wales; the corresponding figure for January 1971 was 8,293,499.
