asked the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what proportion of (a) all, (b) male, and (c) female secondary school pupils in Wales obtained five or more O level passes in 1974;

(2) what proportion of (a) all, (b) male, and (c) female secondary school pupils in Wales obtained two or more A level passes in 1974;

(3) what proportion of all secondary school pupils entered part-time education in institutions of further or higher education in 1974;

(4) what proportion of secondary school pupils in Wales continued full-time education in institutions of higher education in 1974.

On the basis of a 10 per cent. sample survey it is estimated that in 1974:

  1. (i) Five or more O-level passes were obtained by 24 per cent. of all pupils in secondary schools in Wales—boys 24 per cent. and girls 25 per cent.;
  2. (ii) Two or more A-level passes were obtained by 12 per cent. of all pupils in secondary schools in Wales—boys 15 per cent. and girls 12 per cent.;

  4. (iii) 22 per cent. of pupils leaving secondary schools in Wales continued their full-time education in institutions of further and higher education.
No estimate is available of the proportion of secondary school leavers who continued their education part-time in institutions of further and higher education. The figures quoted above are subject to sampling errors.

The proportions of 17 and 18-year-old pupils in maintained secondary schools in Wales in 1974 were:

These data relate the number of pupils aged 17 and 18 at the beginning of 1974 to the number of 13-year-old pupils at the beginning of 1970 and 1969 respectively.
