HC Deb 28 October 1975 vol 898 cc400-1W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many regular reservists were involved in exercise "Inside Right".

Mr. Robert C. Brown

No Regular reservists were called out to take part in the exercise.

Mr. Arthur Latham

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the cost of the recent military exercise, Inside Right; how many gallons of fuel were consumed in this connection; and over what distances personnel were transported to take part.

Mr. Robert C. Brown

Exercise "Inside Right" took place between 6th October and 26th October 1975. Much of the expenditure associated with the exercise cannot be distinguished from normal day-to-day expenditure, and it will be some time before we can identify the "extra costs", which will be made up largely of overtime pay for civilians and movement costs. However, these costs are estimated to be about £250,000. Figures are not available for the number of gallons of fuel used during the exercise.

1,175 TAVR personnel were moved to the Continent with 147 vehicles. This movement was part of the BAOR's normal training and would have taken place in any event. In addition, some 900 vehicles were used to make a representative movement of some 2,100 men from their depots to ports and airfields from which reinforcements for British Forces Germany would be embarked in wartime. For the most part these movements took place within command areas.
