HC Deb 23 October 1975 vol 898 cc230-1W
Mr. Woof

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total revenue obtained from Customs and Excise duties on spirits for the three years 1971, 1972 and 1973, the revenue from Customs and Excise duties for 1974–75, and the value added tax revenue.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

Receipts of spirits duty were:

£ million
1971 395.5
1972 450.7
1973 485.0
VAT receipts in 1973 from spirits are estimated at £60 million.

Receipts from duty and estimated receipts from VAT on spirits in 1974–75 were £554:8 million and £100 million respectively.

Total Customs and Excise revenue in 1974–75 was £7,425.6 million, before adjustments due to the Isle of Man, of which VAT yielded £2,509.5 million. Figures for previous years can be found in Table 24 of "Financial Statistics", a copy of which is in the Library of the House.
