Mr. Ovenden

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the level of tax allowances at 1st April for each year since 1964 for a married couple with two children and for a single parent with two children; and if he will give the real value of such allowances based on 1964 prices.

The allowances shown are those effective for the tax years ending on the following 5th April. Allowance has been made for the effect both of earned income relief and of the family allowance deductions where appropriate. The price index used is the General Index of Retail Prices for the same years taken from Table 1 of "The Internal Purchasing Power of the Pound" published by the Press and Information Service of the Central Statistical Office in July 1975.
