It is estimated that the total cost incurred by acting returning officers at the General Election of February 1974 was approximately £4 million. Final claims have not yet been submitted in all cases. In addition, £1,867,000 was paid to the Post Office from the Consolidated Fund for the provision to candidates of certain free postal facilities.
