HC Deb 21 October 1975 vol 898 c107W
Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what proportion of the workers in industry in England and Wales, respectively, are apprentices.

Mr. John Fraser

Up-to-date figures are not available, but the New Earnings Survey indicated that in April 1974 the proportions of full-time employees who were apprentices were about 2.1 per cent. in England and about 2.2 per cent. in Wales.

Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the percentage of apprenticeships gained by young men and young women entering industry in 1974–75 in Wales and England, respectively.

Mr. John Fraser

I regret that information covering all apprenticeships is not available. The percentages of boys and girls in Wales and England who entered apprenticeships as their first employment in 1974 were as follows:

Boys Percentage Girls Percentage
Wales 38.8 5.5
England 41.9 6.5

Mr. Gwynfor Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the average annual sum paid to industrial apprentices in Wales and England, respectively.

Mr. Booth

It is regretted that this information is not available.
