Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons were being held in prison in England and Wales on 1st March 1975 against whom no offence had been proven, or who were still awaiting trial.

Figures for 1st March 1975 are not readily available, but a routine count on 28th February 1975 showed that 3,763 persons were then awaiting trial in prisons and remand centres in England and Wales.
