asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many persons were convicted of crimes of violence in 1974; by what percentage this figure exceeds or is less than the comparable figure 10 years previously; and if he has any indication of the trend of crimes of violence in the current year.

The number of persons convicted of offences classified as violence against the person in England and Wales in 1974 was 33,171. This figure exceeds the comparable figure in 1964 by 135 per cent.

The number of offences of violence against the person recorded as known to the police in England and Wales in the first six months of 1975 was 32,800. This figure exceeds the comparable figure in 1974 by 10 per cent.
