NOTES TO TABLE:

  1. (a) The statistics shown are by financial years ending in March, except in the case of the National Coal Board which up to 1963 used calendar years.
  2. (b) The surplus/deficit figures are at March 1975 prices. They are before Government grants to meet deficits on revenue account or in respect of price restraint, but after grants for specific purposes, interest and taxation. The index used for conversion to 1975 prices is based on changes in the internal purchasing power of the pound.
  3. (c) The output figures for the Electricity Council and boards do not include purchases from outside sources.
  4. (d) The numbers of employees and the surplus/deficit figures for electricity and gas take into account the industries' contracting and sales of appliances business.
  5. (e) National Coal Board employment figures give colliery manpower.
