HC Deb 26 November 1975 vol 901 cc159-60W
Mr. Christopher Price

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on how many occasions the Gordon-Brown Committee on the tape recording of police interviews has met since it was set up; and at how many of those meeting the chairman was present.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

The committee has held five meetings, all but one of them under the chairmanship of Mr. W. N. Hyde of the Home Office. Mr. Gordon-Brown was transferred to the Cabinet Office before the committee began its work. I am not aware that it was ever known as the "Gordon-Brown Committee".

Mr. Christopher Price

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects the Gordon-Brown Committee on the tape recording of police interviews to report.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to a Question by the hon. and learned Member for Runcorn (Mr. Carlisle) on 10th November.—[Vol. 899, c. 514.]

Mr. Christopher Price

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what arrangements he has made for a pilot project on the tape recording of police interviews to enable the Gordon-Brown Committee to test the effectiveness of this procedure.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

None, but I am ready to consider any such requests the committee may make.
