HC Deb 26 November 1975 vol 901 cc218-9W
Mr. Stonehouse

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the current total of public servants employed by local authorities in Scotland and the total in 1964 and the percentage increase or decrease between the two dates.

Mr. Booth

I have been asked to reply.

About 270,000 people were employed by local authorities and in police forces in Scotland at June 1975 and about 192,000 at June 1964. The responsibilities of local authorities have changed during the period and thus it is not possible to make a meaningful assessment of the change in percentage terms.
