asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current number of civil servants in his Department; and what was the total in equivalent sections of departments in 1964 and the percentage increase or decrease between the two dates.

The total staff of the Home Office on 1st October 1975 was 32,327. The numbers in post in sections of the Department which existed on both 1st October 1964 and 1st October 1975 were 17,711 and 32,038 respectively. This represents an increase of about 81 per cent. between these dates.
