HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 c744W
Mr. Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what studies he has instituted into the feasibility of making Scotland self-sufficient in timber; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. William Ross

No such studies are in progress, and no separate statistics are maintained of timber consumption in Scotland. The existing area of woodland in Scotland, once it has reached full production about the end of the century, is expected to provide wood sufficient to meet Scotland's estimated share of the present total United Kingdom consumption as calculated pro rata on a population basis, and to allow in addition a margin for increased consumption.
