HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 cc812-3W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what recent representations he has received from the British Textile Confederation and the European textile and clothing industries; and what action he has taken in consequence.

Mr. Clinton Davis

The British Textile Confederation recently expressed concern that concessions were to be made in the case of restrictions imposed on imports of textiles from Taiwan and the Republic of Korea. It was explained to the Confederation that goods in transit from Taiwan or Korea on or before 30th September would be licensed provided they were paid for under the terms of irrevocable letters of credit opened before the dates of announcement of the restrictions. No representations have been received from the European textile and clothing industries.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what representations he has received to implement quantitative control, product by product, covering imported textiles; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Clinton Davis

Representations have been received to apply quantitative controls to the following products: man-made fibres, yarn, coated fabrics, shirts, woollen suits, hosiery, knitwear and clothing. The Government have already taken action to restrain imports in many of these sectors. We are ready to consider the case for further restrictions on individual items on their merits in the light of our international obligations.
