asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) what proportion of teachers in (a) primary and (b) secondary schools in England and in each English region have a degree;

(2) what proportion of teachers in (a) primary and (b) secondary schools in Wales has a degree;

(3) what proportion of teachers of (a) science and (b) mathematics in secondary schools in Wales have a degree;

(4) what proportion of secondary school teachers of (a) science and (b) mathematics in (i) England and (ii) each English region have a degree.

The percentage of full-time teachers in maintained schools at 31st March 1973 who held a degree was as follows:

A survey conducted in 1965–66 indicated that in maintained secondary schools in England and Wales 47 per cent. of teachers teaching science, excluding mathematics, held a degree or degree equivalent: the corresponding figure for mathematics was 30 per cent. Thirty-seven per cent. of all teachers in maintained secondary schools in the survey had a degree and 3 per cent. had qualifications equivalent to a degree. Information is not available separately for Wales or the English Regions.
