HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 cc860-1W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how much of the total cost of school transport he estimates could be recovered from parents by imposing a standard charge of 7p per journey.

Mr. Barry Jones

Information relating to Wales alone is not available, but it is estimated that if pupils now receiving free transport to and from school in England and Wales as a whole paid 7p a journey the yield would be about £26 million a year or 40 per cent of the present total cost.

Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the total cost of providing free school transport in (a) primary and (b) secondary schools in Wales in 1974.

Mr. Barry Jones

The total cost of providing school transport in primary and secondary schools in Wales in the financial year 1973–74 was £1,009,483 and £2,714,252 respectively.
