HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 c767W
Mr. Fairbairn

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what additional sums were spent last year in Newcastle on equipment for the Medical Research Council; who requested the equipment; and who was responsible for authorising it.

Mr. Mulley

Total expenditure on equipment for Medical Research Council units and for council grantholders in Newcastle upon Tyne during the year 1974–75 amounted to £145,000. The equipment was requested by the unit directors and grantholders concerned and its purchase was authorised by the council.

Mr. Fairbairn

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science why £49,000 was spent on an electron-microscope when two others were already present in the Medical Research Council building at Newcastle.

Mr. Mulley

The new microscope was needed to replace a machine purchased with funds donated privately to the former honorary director of the Medical Research Council's Demyelinating Diseases Unit which has been transferred to the Department of Pathology at Newcastle General Hospital. The cost was £35,500.
