HL Deb 12 November 1975 vol 365 c1967WA
Lord GARDINER

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Which Ministers are properly referred to as the "Law Officers" and the "Law Ministers".

The LORD CHANCELLOR

The Attorney General, the Lord Advocate, the Solicitor General and the Solicitor General for Scotland are properly referred to as the "Law Officers". As the noble and learned Lord may be aware, the term "Law Ministers" was used by the Prime Minister in his letter of 11th September to Sir David Renton about the Report of his Committee on the Preparation of Legislation. It was, as the Solicitor General indicated in another place on 3rd November, during a debate on the Committee's Report, a compendious way of referring to the Lord Chancellor and the Law Officers.
