HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 c702W
Mr. Cordle

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many incidents of oil pollution affecting coastal waters have been reported to his Department in the past 12 months; and what has been the cost to the Exchequer of undertaking necessary remedial measures.

Mr. Denis Howell

The maintenance of comprehensive records of incidents of oil on or near the shore was introduced in July 1975. Since then, local authorities in England have reported 42 incidents. Such costs as arise have been met by the local authorities concerned, and there has been no direct cost to the Exchequer.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade maintains records of oil sighted at sea.
