HC Deb 12 November 1975 vol 899 cc781-2W
Mr. Alexander Fletcher

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps he proposes to take to control the export of antique treasures.

Mr. Hugh Jenkins

Export licences are already required for the export of works of art and antiques over 100 years old and worth £4,000 or more; and for British archaeological items over 100 years old, and for documentary and photographic material over 70 years old, whatever the value. Before granting a licence the Government are advised by the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art on whether licences should be withheld to enable public collections to purchase. I am satisfied with the working of the present arrangements.
