HC Deb 11 November 1975 vol 899 cc563-4W
35. Dr. Hampson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what responsibilities his Department has for approving degree courses in reorganised colleges of education.

Mr. Mulley

Under Regulation 8 of the Further Education Regulations 1975, which apply to all establishments of further education, including colleges providing courses of teacher training, the provision of any full-time or part-time course of study in preparation for a degree requires my Department's approval.

Mr. Edge

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish in the Official Report the estimated number of teachers completing training for each year from 1970 to 1980 and the estimated number of teacher job vacancies for each year during the same period.

Mr. Mulley

The numbers of students successfully completing courses of initial training in England and Wales are estimated to be:

1970 38,200
1971 40,400
1972 42,000
1973 42,000
1974 41,400
1975 39,800
1976 37,300
1977 34,800
1978 33,300
1979 28,000

No estimate can usefully be made for 1980 until the number to be admitted to courses in September 1977 has been decided.

No estimates are available of vacancies, since they arise partly from wastage from the profession and partly from movement of teachers between schools.
