Mr. Hall-Davis

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what proportions of employed and self-employed men and employed and self-employed women do not claim retirement pension within one and two years, respectively, of reaching their sixty-fifth and sixtieth birthdays.

Mr. Meacher

The proportion of employed men who do not claim retirement pensions to which they have entitlement within one year of pension age is estimated to be about one in five, and, for those who do not claim within two years, about one in ten. For self-employed men, the proportions are estimated to be about two in five and one in three respectively.

The corresponding proportions for both employed and self-employed women who and I regret, therefore, that summarised information in respect of those authorities cannot be given.
