asked the Secretary of State for Employment what plans he has to encourage redundant workers to widen their area of search for new jobs.

As part of the emergency measures announced recently by the Government, consultations were held with the Manpower Services Commission, and I am now advised that the following changes are being made in the transfer schemes which provide assistance to unemployed workers who are prepared to seek and take work beyond daily travelling distance of their homes.

Introduction of a new job search scheme which will provide free fares for job seekers to attend interviews plus an overnight subsistence allowanced if an overnight stay is unavoidable, facilities for a job seeker, with the approval of the Employment Service Agency, to go to a locality for up to two weeks to look for a job and in certain circumstances a free travel warrant to start work.

Improvements in the employment transfer scheme which include almost doubling of some of the grants and allowances plus a new rehousing grant of £1,000 for the person who having moved from an
